American Idol and Spirituality: Are They Converging?
Case 1: The winner of Season 4 of American Idol has a SMASH first hit. The title? Jesus Take The Wheel
Case 2: In Season 6, a contestant, someone simultaneously criticized for being too Christian and not Christian enough, sings a dc Talk tune that subtly caters to his Christian fans and lands in the final 10.
Case 3: Outside the performer’s circle, a contestant from Season 6 signs John Lennon’s Imagine and gets lambasted for the lyrics
Imagine no possessions/It isn’t hard to do/Nothing to kill or die for/And no religion too
… because audience members considered it a slam against faith.
